Biliteracy Advantage
Started in 2023, Biliteracy Advantage offers multiple consulting services in dual language education. Our team is lead by Dr. Mario Ferron, and includes both practitioners and scholars with great expertise in dual language.
Dr. Mario Ferrón has a life-long experience with dual language. Born and raised in Mexico City, he had the privilege of attending a dual language school. From PK to 12 th grade, he received core-content instruction in both English and Spanish. Aware of the socioeconomic and cognitive benefits DLI can generate, Dr. Ferrón ensured that his two sons received similar dual language instruction. Dr. Ferron’s grandson is currently a student in a dual language school.
Dr. Ferrón became a dual language teacher at Pharr, San Juan, Alamo Independent School District (PSJA-ISD), where he taught 8 th Grade U.S. History in Spanish for eight years before becoming Dual Language Coordinator for Secondary Schools. During his tenure, PSJA-ISD became the school district with the largest secondary school dual language program in Texas, serving more than 3,000 students in eight middle schools and five high schools.
In 2016, Dr. Ferrón became Dual Language Director for San Antonio ISD, overseeing the implementation and expansion of Dual Language instruction across the district. Under his tenure, SAISD increased its Dual Language program offering, from two schools in 2016 to 48 schools in 2019; including three high schools and two middle schools.
In 2019, Dr. Ferron Joined Uvalde CISD as Dual Language Director, promoting the implementation of a PK-12, Early-College, Dual Language Program. Under his tenure, Uvalde Dual Language program has significantly expanded; from 330 students PK-5 th in 2019, to almost 1000 students PK-11 th 2023. In August of 2021, Uvalde CISD opened its new Dual Language Academy; a PK-6 In-district charter school, exclusively devoted for dual language Instruction.
Dr. Ferrón has a Doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with specialization in Bilingual Studies, from the University of Texas - Brownsville and two Masters Degrees in Bilingual Education and History, from the University of Texas Pan-American. His academic research overwhelmingly supports what he personally witnessed in his classroom and in his life – superior academic achievement exhibited by children participating in dual language instruction.
In 2012, Dr. Ferrón’s doctoral dissertation won First Place in the National Association for Bilingual Education, NABE Outstanding Dissertation Award; and he is a renowned keynote speaker and presenter in state and national conferences about Bilingual Education. Dr. Ferron is also a co-author in the most recent book published by Drs. Thomas & Collier. He is also a well- known consultant, providing dual language professional development and consulting services for school districts across nation. Dr. Ferrón has strong interpersonal and academic communication skills both in English and Spanish, and a strong commitment to work with linguistically and culturally diverse populations.
